Chia Gigahorse Farmers - Upgrade Nvidia Drivers and avoid the Boot Errors

New Minimum Nvidia Driver Update

I moved from Giga31 to Giga35 and missed the release note that said the minimum Nvidia driver has been changed. Regardless, the current version I have is a lower version but it is still working.

We have 2 choices, the legacy kernel module flavor and the open kernel module flavor.

In my case, I'm using a GTX 1080 which I believe uses the Pascal Architecture and will install the legacy version. The legacy version is also know as the Proprietary Flavor. This version will also support Maxwell, Volta, Turing, and Ampere.

If you are unsure which one to install, you can try the legacy/proprietary version first.

Legacy/Proprietary kernel module flavor

sudo apt-

If you have an RTX GPU, you can use the Open Kernel Flavor which is designed for Turing, Ampere, and newer GPUs.

Open Kernel module flavor

sudo apt-

WARNING

One of my test systems didn't boot and I blocked SSH and was not able to remote and remove the drivers. After doing some more research, there is only one proprietary driver that has been tested. If you go into your Software and Updates and click Addition Drivers, you will get a list of drivers for your GPU.

Installing nvidia-driver-535 (proprietary, tested)

1.

You'll need to stop your farmer or harvester, and when you select your driver, it may fail the first time. In fact, it failed for me every time for the first time. It actually starts removing the old driver before it fails, and then you can reboot.

After the reboot, it will install, and then it will ask you to reboot again.

Why use the GUI?

The GUI gave me a list of the drivers that my GPU can install. Many of us do not know if the architecture of our GPU and the GUI did pick out that I needed a proprietary driver. It also listed the one that was tested.

As far as I understand, if you have an RTX, you can install the OPEN drivers but if you are unsure, the proprietary driver should work. Eliminate the worry but using the GUI and install the tested version.

Results?

All systems are running smoothly for the past 3 days. I can't tell if partials are being validated any quicker. MadMax does say there will be about a 10% increase in efficiency for Turing GPUs, which mine is not.
